The overall Water Framework Directive (WFD) classification for this water body is poor. It is failing for diatoms (plants not visible to the naked eye), phosphates (both have WFD classification of poor), macrophytes (plants visible to the naked eye) and morphology (both have WFD classifications of moderate).

The failures for diatoms and macrophytes are linked to the high levels of phosphates so solving this problem will improve the plant communities within the river. More investigation is needed to determine the sources of phosphate as it could be inputs from sewage treatment works and or agricultural and road runoff. Once the sources are determined measures should be put in place to tackle the issues.

This water body has very good aquatic invertebrate and fish populations, very high levels of dissolved oxygen and low levels of ammonia.

There are currently three mitigation measures outstanding, the next step is to determine if these are still require and implement if necessary. The measures are as follows:

Not in place:

  • Remove obsolete structures
  • Increase in-channel morphological diversity
  • Structures managed to allow fish passage up and downstream

In place:

  • Selective vegetation control,
  • Manage invasive species
  • Retain marginal aquatic and riparian habitats
  • Sediment management strategies.
