Essex Rivers Hub

Chelmer; Whiteleys wet woodland enhancement

This stretch of river flows through a predominantly arable landscape, but a small patch of wet woodland still remains in this area. This project seeks to extend this woodland to provide additional habitat for wildlife and to act as a buffer between the watercourse and the adjoining arable land.

One of the main issues affecting water quality in Essex rivers is diffuse pollution from arable fields, particularly the impacts of phosphorous from fertilizer. This project would seek to address this issue by buffering the watercourse from the arable land surrounding it and therefore reducing the loss of phosphorous from the arable land into the river.

The outcome of this project will be 0.5 hectares of wet woodland creation.
