Essex Rivers Hub

Davy Down

Davy Down is a Country Park that is situated, in part, on the bank of the Mardyke just upstream from the viaduct. This area offers a variety of habitats and is popular with local residents.

Although this area is already great for wildlife there is potential to create more habitat areas within the Mardyke itself. This could be achieved by introducing meanders and reprofiling other areas of the channel to create a range of riparian habitats including creation of off channel pools and scrapes.

Also planting and improving surrounding vegetation, changing mowing regimes, etc. where improvements to in-channel and bankside habitats will benefit. This work would also require engage with local people to provide information on the reasons why the work is necessary, and it is also an opportunity to educate local people on their impact on the water environment (misconnections etc).

It would also be beneficial to secure funding for an education person to be based here to work with local schools and aid the current warden with the management and promotion of this site.
